October 22- Sydney, Cape Breton
October 22
Sydney, Cape Breton
Starting to feel better. Still have a hoarse cough but not tired
anymore. Knee doing better too but after a lot of rough walking today it was
sore. We arrived in Sydney, Cape Breton at 7am. Water was bouncy to say the
least. Made getting into the shuttle boat to shore a real challenge. It was 41d
but very windy and icy. We had a walking tour of the historic downtown Sydney
and went onto a couple historic homes and churches. I had a couple chances to stop and talk to a few
docents and one fellow said most of the costumers here do LARPs (Live Action
Role Playing) in historic dress but are not all interested in reenacting. I sat
with a couple of the ladies at one 1785 house and they said they dress to look
like 1790s but mainly pile on clothes to keep warm. So, it’s hard to see any
style but its working women's clothes, nothing fancy. I showed them a few pics
of mine and would have liked to exchange info but didn't have time with our
tour group leaving. Our final stop was at the historical society's building who
provided delicious hot tea in beautiful English teacups and oatcakes, which were
a thin rectangle kind of oatmeal cookie. They were a Scottish recipe and
delicious. They sold the recipe on a postcard so I bought a couple of those.
Great fundraiser idea.
After our tour, hubby and I walked around the downtown because I wanted to shop. Except they were mostly banks, and other daily living shops, not an interesting shopping area that I'd hoped. That may have to wait until we get to Quebec.
As we walked back towards the ship,
we saw a very large historic house serving pub grub and thought we’d try that
for lunch. But so, did at least 100 others waiting to get in. Sadly, we had to
pass and just continued on to the ship.
Tomorrow we'll be in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, land
of Anne of Green Gables. Supposed to be colder with some rain. I've only seen 2
Canadian cats but haven't been close enough to take photos for the Catspotting
group I’m on :( There
is lots of Fall colors now but we mostly see it at a distance.
We again had a nice send-off by a female bagpiper on the dock
this time. Of course, this ship has corny horns that instead of blaring, uses
organ music to play the Love Boat theme. Too corny.
